Default fixing monitor settings 8.04

How does one correct the monitor settings in 8.04? After an update
they got hosed, and the user is cranking about the low resolution
settings. The settings appear correct when booting the live CD, but
the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file has useless info in the monitor section, but
seems to have correctly configured the device.
Menu->appearance->Monitor settings has greyed out sections and the low
res settings when the system is booted from the install.

Backup the xorg.conf file. From a terminal:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

That will try to fix the X server (it's the same thing that selecting
option #4 in the recovery boot does) and set a generic xorg.conf. Note:
you can view the script for the xfix option here:

cat /usr/share/recovery-mode/options/xfix

Or, if you know what type of graphic card & monitor, you can try with a GUI:

gksu displayconfig-gtk
