Default cant contact ldap server+help

is there someone working on ldap ?

i have a ubuntu server installed with ldap server and an ldap client on another ubuntu server machine. i have installed and configured all the necessary files.

but wen i try to contact ldap frmo the server it says

*ldap_sasl_bind(SIMPLE): Can't contact LDAP server (-1)

i am looking for a feasible solution to overcome this error

even the /etc/init.d/slapd restart responds with a failure

i also got this while debugging

root@Client1:/etc/ldap# ldapsearch -x -d5
ldap_new_connection 1 1 0

ldap_connect_to_host: TCP
ldap_new_socket: 3
ldap_prepare_socket: 3
ldap_connect_to_host: Trying

ldap_pvt_connect: fd: 3 tm: -1 async: 0
ldap_close_socket: 3
ldap_sasl_bind(SIMPLE): Can't contact LDAP server (-1)

please help
