Default How do I setup a particular video player as the default player

Hi everyone:

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and have been trying to find a way that when I put a dvd in my drive that the dvd will play with the default application that I choose. Thanks.

Hi Mark,

I think the gnome way of doing this is kind of backwards in that,
except for a few items in Preferred Applications, you have to know the
secret. For example, to change the default program that handles a JPG
file, you need to first find a JPG file, then right-click on it and
choose "properties".

There should be an "Open With" tab that you can set and, via the fine
print, fine that all files of that type will be opened this way now.
Perhaps you can do that with a DVD file.

It would be nice if this kind of functionality was available through
Preferences.

cheers,

I answered the same question of yours two weeks ago or so. Cannot be
done in 8.04, but it is possible in 8.10

Well, you are partially right... this was/is a raging debate in Hardy,
but it is very possible. Unfortunately I've been celebrating US Veterans
Day this evening, so my ability to provide detailed/simplified
instructions on how to do this are not trustworthy just now :-) Anyway,
here are the necessary links (cascaded - last link provides a
workaround, but I'd recommend reading the others first):

I stand corrected. Not very pretty, though
