Attempting to upgrade a fully updated 8.04 installation I get this:

W:Failed to fetch
http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/intrepid-updates/main/binary-i386/Packages.bz2
Hash Sum mismatch
, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old
ones used instead

and the upgrade aborts.

Checking equivalent files from http://archive.ubuntu.com shows they seem
to have the same checksums... confused...

Just retry a bit later, it will most likely fix itself
