Default installation failure

Hi all,
I tried to install Lenny on Toshiba laptop which has Windows Vista* using network installation (netinst cd).*It booted normally and after downloading some files suddenly stopped. The system failed to boot. I started it from a live cd* and found that the ext3 filesystem was created and there were the basic directories -etc,usr,var. There was no boot loader. I installed grub from the live cd and managed to load vmlinuz and initrd but I don't know how to proceed with the installation.

Any ideas will be welcomed.

*

Alexander

Now that you are still in a early install stage, I would reinstall all
again, from scratch.

The error could have come from varios sources, maybe the remote host (or
your ISP) was having hiccups. You can retry the installation with the CD
or DVD media source to discard any connection issue.

I realize that this doesn't sound like terribly sophisticated advice
(and it's not), but if I were you I'd start over. Do the install
over again from scratch, formatting the relevant partitions during
the installation. If you find that the install hangs at the same
spot two or three times in a row, then I would use a newer copy
of the installer, such as the Squeeze installer, the Sid installer,
or a "daily build" development installer, even if you are trying
to install Lenny.

Default Installation failure

I'm trying to reinstall CentOS on a machine I've reconditioned for it,
but for reasons I can't fathom, when the installation disk comes up
and prompts for the install type, and I type either <enter> (graphics
isntall) or "linux text"<enter>, after it loads the initrd image, the
machine shuts off.

It's an older machine I built myself (and ran CentOS on for a number
of years), AMD Athlon 64 x2, 2GB of memory, 2 SATA hard drives, ECS
GE6100PM-M2 motherboard.

I should probably even know the answer to this one, but I'm stumped.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

The memory was working perfectly before I put it into this boc (came
out of another one that's been running for months).

None - the dots print out, then the screen goes black and the machine shuts off.

Try checking the power supply, swap in another one from a different pc.
