Another problem or bug with WUBI (Live CD)

Hi,

I have found another one. I started the Live CD for AMD 64 (Desktop)
under Windows Vista. As I made the choice in the UMenu the first process
was successful but the next it seems there's a problem. The program
creates a new image on the hard drive. after 100% I get an error message:

Ubuntu Installation
Could not access the CD, please make sure other applications are not using
it and try again
Try again Cancel

When I click on the 'Try again' button the process will begin every time
anew. I had it around 4x done.
It could be a bug?

Amazing how something so simple can become so complicated :-) If I get a
chance I'll clear 8-10Gb off of my WinXPP drive and try to install tomorrow.

I'm not familiar enough with Wubi & the 64bit to know if that would bet
the problem, but I tend to agree with you that it might.

I just installed via Wubi on the WinXPPro drive (all 32bit) and the
install went just fine as far as the CD part... after the reboot it is
now in the "Installing System" portion, so I'll post back when it
finishes, or blows up my system :-) I only had 8Gb on the drive and
allocated 6Gb (the recommended by umenu) to Ubuntu & hopefully it won't
run into disk space issues.

OK, it finished installing & I rebooted only to find that I had an
"Error: 15" issue with Wubi's grub. However I'd forgotten that on this
system I have drives a & b swapped (Win is on B, Ubuntu proper is on A)
so I had to modify the Wubi grub to try hd0,0 to get it to start. Wow
sound was set to full blast so I got the full Ubuntu startup sound at
the startup... I reckon that I won't need to clean my ears for another
week or so.

Anyway, once I got the past the hd0,0 issue (Demetry don't worry about
this as I have an odd hard drive setup on that machine where I've
basically told Windows it is on a different drive than it thinks it is.
So you shouldn't experience this problem) Ubuntu fired right up... Of
course it does a silly default screen resolution other than 1024x768
(why can't they make that the default?).

So, end result Demetry is that your install may be having hardware
issues, so you might try the suggestions from the links I provided and
perhaps try the suggestion in

I realise that you are blind so sorry for the length of the post and
sending you off to all the links. However, it seems to work here on my
system (albeit with my swapped hard drives):

WinXPPro - fully updated to all the latest
2.4Ghz/1Gb Intel 32bit
Ubuntu liveCD 8.04.1 (http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/)
http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

I have to admit that I certainly appreciate your perseverance in trying
to get Ubuntu installed. Can you please provide details on your system
and the Windows version you are running?

This is for the benefit of NoOp and Demetry to verify
that the Ubuntu Hardy live CD Amd 64 version is not
buggy. I have a reasonably new Gateway 5656GT
computer with an AMD64-X2 6000+ cpu, 500GB HDD, 3 Gig
of ram and 3 GHtz speed. Not bragging; just the facts.
NoOP posed the question if I or someone with a 64 bit
processor could verify that Hardy AMD64 Live CD could
be downloaded, burned to disc and install WUBI on
windows that it would simplify troubleshooting
Demetry's install issues. I installed Ubuntu on my
Vista partition without a hitch and am posting this
reply from it. The only glitch, if you can call it
that, is when I removed the disc after the initial
install and selected reboot, the machine didn't reboot
but just closed windows until I pushed the blue on/off
button. The machine then rebooted and completed the
installation.
The live CD was downloaded from Ubuntu's site and the
download md5sum checked against the md5sum listed on
the download site. Used Dolphin to burn the iso with
K3B and examine the files. Using the md5sum.txt file
on the CD to verify the CD files were all correct. I
burned at 8X speed with K3b because I can't select a
slower speed from the drop down window, but it was
slow enough burn to get it done.
Shutdown and started up Vista which haven't use since
Ubuntu install on the machine and updated Vista and AV
definition files before attempting the WUBI install
which took some time. When I closed the DVD drive door
containing the live CD, the program immediately
started up. I clicked the middle screen entry to
install Ubuntu in windows and the process started and
ran without any problem with the only glitch mentioned
above. So, it appears that Demetry has some other
issue with his install of WUBI using the live CD. With
all the screens I had open at one time I can see where
someone with a visual problem can get confused and do
the wrong thing. Hoping Gary and the other gurus on
the list can get Demetry's issues resolved. Maybe
Demetry would have better luck ordering an Ubuntu
AMD84 live CD to use assuming they still can be
ordered. Glad to help where I can.
The detail is given in hope it might suggest to the
gurus where Demety might have made a misclick or
something that would prevent a good install.

Firstly, thanks for your detailled reports.
OK, after I killed my hard drive with the playing the partition thing
from Ubutun. I reinstalled Windows XP again.

But, with Windows Vista for along time I'd to many troubles with it.
And, I reordered the cd iso image for I386 and burned it successful.
Under Windows XP Home with all updates and service pack 3 it works the
WUBI or UMenu fine. I do not knwo really what was wron. I think Vista
was the problem maybe... Since I'm back to Windows XP my computer don't
crashed anymore.

Now, I will try to install Ubuntu again.

You should see the messages that you sent; Gmail throws out copies of
these messages because it already shows them from the moment you send
them. For example this very thread has 19 messages: 9 yours, 4 mine
(including this one), and 6 from others. How many messages do you see?
