Default Google Earth on Intel AMD64

Hello,

I was able to install Google Earth on Intel AMD64 ( Ubuntu OS), but there is some problem in the initialization. At the start I get the message:

************** Google Earth Error:

Google earth detected an error while trying to authenticate.
Check:

*(1) your network connection ( can you get to www.google.com)
*(2) firwall settings.

Error code 29.

I pinged the www.google.com and it worked, I don't know what
is missing now.

Thanks.

Well, it looks like maybe your firewall/iptables settings are blocking
other ports that are keeping GE from working. A ping doesn't
necessarily mean the firewall isn't blocking particular ports, it just
means you can get ICMP packets.

issue the following command:

sudo apt-get install lib32nss-mdns

This is a known problem.

I don't use amd64, but here what a quick Google for amd64 AND "Google
earth" AND "your network connection" turned up:
http://groups.google.de/group/earth-linux/browse_thread/thread/91b13b9c3a1ed061

In short: install lib32nss-mdns, there seems to be a bug in Ubuntu 8.04
on amd64 that leads to this package not being installed automatically
with Google Earth.

Hello,

I found the solution at:

http://groups.google.com/group/earth-linux/browse_thread/thread/d7bb6e1608cbf5fd

We need to install lib32nss0-mdns.* Now the Google Earth is working as expected.

Thanks.

Problem: I tried to get lib32nss-mdns on Hardy and it fails saying
no such file. What can be the problem?

Do you run the amd64 architecture? This package only exists for this
arch: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/lib32nss-mdns
