Default too high latency

hallo
i can t get good performances in jack with latency < 23
i ve tried different combinations on jack setup but with no luck , whenever i try to lower the latency i get crackles on the output

i am using a Centrino 1.4 with a Tascam 122 soundcard but it did the same in an older AMD k7
it is obvious that it s not CPU related
i am not using any other software just connecting input to output and talk on the mic

should the RT label be light yellow and not grayed out? (see the attached screenshot)
tx

Ah yes, USB audio on Linux has had latency issues for a long time but
I'm afraid there is no fix for it yet. Use firewire, PCI, or PCMCIA for
low latency applications.
