Motherboard compatibility - AMD, Intel
Hello all!
I've changed my system due to compatibility problems with ubuntustudio, but still have similar problems with the new one. Both have Athlon 64 x2 processors, one has a MSI motherboard, other an Elite motherboard. With the current 10.04 release (not final) I have also similar problems (it doesn't even boot this time, after installing the OS). I remember a previous discussion recommending the use of Intel processors. So it seems I have to change my motherboard and CPU again, now for an Intel :-( What are your recommendations for an inexpensive Intel based configuration, able to run Ubuntustudio? It must be inexpensive, it will be my third motherboard and CPU for my homestudio, if it isn't inexpensive my wife will kill me :-) I've saw some inexpensive motherboard+cpu bundles, with an ASROCK G31M-S motherboard and an Intel E3300 CPU, do you think this dual core celeron has enough power to have some realtime effects running well (p.e. rackarrack)? And with this hardware should I expect some compatibility issues with ubuntustudio? Hi Fernando
I'm a bit suprised about your troubles. Here, all the team have never met a AMD based motherboard, and more an Athlon64 x2 one which wasn't working with Ubuntu Studio !!! What is exactly your problem ? I'm sure there is a solution to fix... Does your computer work with a live Ubuntu CD ? You can install Ubuntu with a live CD and then upgrade your hard disk installation by using Internet and asking for all Ubuntu studio packages. For material, few things, The best motherboards are Asus and MSI. Asrock is a trademark of Asus, but with lower quality, usually, not very solid. Celeron even in dual core, are very very slower than AMD Athlon 64 x2 processors for multimedia uses under GNU/Linux... If you still want to buy and Intel plateform, you should take a motherboard from ASUS + Core2 Duo or better. The best quality/performances/price is AMD. Hope it helps, Laurent lprod.org Le 26/04/2010 13:14, Fernando Gomes a écrit : > Hello all! > > I've changed my system due to compatibility problems with > ubuntustudio, but still have similar problems with the new one. The PC I'm trying to use has an MSI motherboard, I'll check its model and the processor installed tomorrow. Since there is a final ubuntu 10.04 version now, I'll try to install it and if it works I'll then install the ubuntustudio packages as you suggested. With previous ubuntustudio versions there were lockups during boot if using the realtime kernel. I have best results downloading the standard kernel, applying the rt patch to it, compile it and install it, but also had some stability issues (some freezes from time to time). I'll try with this new version and I'll let you know Best regards Fernando >> Hello all! >> >> I've changed my system due to compatibility problems with >> ubuntustudio, but still have similar problems with the new one. Motherboard compatibility - AMD, Intel
Hi
As promissed, here are some details and the current situation on my compatibility issues with Ubuntu Studio: My current motherboard is a MSI K9MM-V/MS-7312 (VIA K8M800 chipset, S3 Graphics Unichrome 2D/3D Graphics), the processor is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ stepping 02, as you can see on the messages file I've put below. It works flawlessly with Win XP and worked 24/7 since I bought it with Ubuntu (7.10 through 9.10, with standard kernel). As you recommended I installed Ubuntu 10.04 "standard" (I've installed the x86 version, not the AMD64) and then installed the ubuntustudio packages. If I use the standard kernel the PC works as expected. If I try to boot using the RT kernel it sometimes hangs during boot saying it didn't find the boot disk, and sometimes it boots normally, but when using the GUI the mouse starts working in "slow motion" (sometimes it works in slow motion from the beginning, sometimes only after some minutes). Even with the mouse working in "slow motion" the audio applications work on realtime (just tried Hydrogen using Jack). Sometimes after a few minutes all the gui seems to freeze but the mouse keeps moving (but I have no feedback from clicking applications or even trying to alt-tab between them). I'm sending the messages file after booting with standard kernel, I don't understand why it has no record for the rt kernel boot on it :-( I've saw the message "HPET not enabled in BIOS. You might try hpet=force boot option" and I've tried to force HPET as suggested, in this case this message disappeared but the problems were similar. Tonight I'll boot the RT kernel and try to put the dmesg output to file. Can you point me to some diagnostic that can give any clue to the problem? Is there any known issue with this chipset, or embedded graphics controller? Before using this PC in my "home studio" I've used another AMD board and processor, was a motherboard with an AMD 780G chipset with a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ processor. It worked very well with ubuntustudio 8.04, with more recent versions had similar problems to those I have now (slow motion mouse, also some PC freezes - everything including the mouse freezes, this don't happen with the current pc), the only way to be able to use more recent ubuntustudio versions was to install the standard ubuntu, to get a new kernel, to patch it with the RT patch and to compile it, it then works almost flawlessly (only some freezes from time to time). Someone here in the list said at that time that it was better to use Intel platforms, so this was the reason for my initial question, I don't want to build another PC for my "home studio" (it will be the third) and have similar problems :-( May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] Initializing cgroup subsys cpu May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] Linux version 2.6.32-21-generic (buildd@rothera) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-4ubuntu5) ) #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 (Ubuntu 2.6.32-21.32-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2) May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] KERNEL supported cpus: May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] Intel GenuineIntel May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] AMD AuthenticAMD May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] NSC Geode by NSC May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] Cyrix CyrixInstead May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] Centaur CentaurHauls May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] Transmeta GenuineTMx86 May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] Transmeta TransmetaCPU May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] UMC UMC UMC UMC May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] BIOS-provided physical RAM map: May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009f400 (usable) May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 000000000009f400 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000000f0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000007bef0000 (usable) May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 000000007bef0000 - 000000007bef3000 (ACPI NVS) May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 000000007bef3000 - 000000007bf00000 (ACPI data) May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) May 2 18:59:10 homestudio kernel: [ 0.000000] DMI 2.3 present. Motherboard compatibility - AMD, Intel
Hi
As promised, here are some details and the current situation on my compatibility issues with Ubuntu Studio: My current motherboard is a MSI K9MM-V/MS-7312 (VIA K8M800 chipset, S3 Graphics Unichrome 2D/3D Graphics), the processor is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ stepping 02, as you can see on the messages file I've attached. I know the graphics controller is not a good one with lots of ubuntu support issues, I can put an AGP Radeon board I have somewhere to test the difference... Before using this PC in my "home studio" I've used another AMD board and processor in the "home studio", was a motherboard with an AMD 780G chipset with a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ processor. Someone here in the list said at that time that it was better to use Intel platforms, so this was the reason for my initial question, I don't want to build another PC for my "home studio" (it will be the third) and have similar problems :-( On Fri, Apr 30, 2010 at 12:23 PM, laurent.bellegarde <laurent.bellegarde@free.fr> wrote: > Fernando Gomes wrote: >> Hi Laurent >> >> Thanks for your answer! Motherboard compatibility - AMD, Intel
Hi Fernando.
I've read your message, and the zip file attach. I've notice nothing strange or bad in the dmesg file. Few things to my mind could explain the trouble. My mother has bought a laptop with a unichrome video controller. I've installed on it Hardy with a lot of difficulties, due to the integrated graphic card. It's really a bad one, maybe one of the most difficult to make work properly under GNU/Linux. So, you should try this. Keep your install, stop the PC, open it, plug the ATI AGP graphic controller, and then boot the PC, enter fastly into the bios, and modified the video configuration, with shunting off the uinchrome video controller, and allow the ATI AGP work. Save the bios and reboot, with the ATI controller connected to the monitor. For the boot, use the generic kernel. If you have chance, Lucid should fine the change and propose an image. With synpatic/or material devices in system/admin menu, install the ATI xorg server package. Reboot with generic kernel to see if the computer work fine. When everything, is ok, in a terminal, do sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and reboot on RT kernel. Here, in my laptop (Intel PIV dual-core, ATI radeon), the ati driver is working fine with the RT-kernel only in2D mode, but the lucid install is stable. Motherboard compatibility - AMD, Intel
Hi Laurent
Thanks for your reply, this is my update: I've inhibited the onboard graphics controller and installed a ATI Radeon 9200 Pro (a spare board I have at home). The standard Ubuntu works much better due to a better graphics controller (3D effects are now possible, etc.). With the realtime kernel I have almost the same issues I had before (and I have to remove the 3D effects, because with 3D effects active some application windows are completely black, p.e. Nautilus). The mouse sometimes works in "slow motion" from the beginning, sometimes change to "slow motion" during the first minutes after logging in. I've noticed two different things on dmesg , one is this line that appears sometimes (complete dmesg output attached): [ 512.000033] should not be here with counts=0 The other issue I was unable to copy it because the PC completely hangs a few minutes later, is a watchdog failure of what to me seems the ethernet interface driver (and the ethernet communication was blocked for some seconds). After that message I had a eth0 link up message and the system has recovered. Now I've started testing with my USB audio interface, and when the mouse starts working in slow motion the audio interface also stopped working, so it seems that the USB subsystem has some issues with the RT kernel. Do you suggest any other diagnose that could help to find the culprit(s)? The kernel that I'm using is the Linux version 2.6.31-10-rt, that was installed when I choose the ubuntustudio packages, but it has a version previous to the standard kernel - Linux version 2.6.32-22-generic. Is this the 'good' RT kernel for Ubuntu 10.04? Are there some alternative RT kernels? In my previous platform I normally built my own RT kernels, but I want to use the distribution RT kernel if possible. I've made also some tests using the generic kernel with audio, using Hydrogen and Rackarrack and I didn't noticed audio issues with the generic (non RT kernel), with Jack configured with the RT option, is this normal? If there is no other way I can try to change the motherboard but I need to be sure to buy one that works with the RT kernel, are there any suggestions (if possible compatible with my current processor - AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ stepping 02) Thanks in advance Fernando On Wed, May 5, 2010 at 4:17 PM, laurent.bellegarde <laurent.bellegarde@free.fr> wrote: > Hi Fernando. > > I've read your message, and the zip file attach. > > I've notice nothing strange or bad in the dmesg file.
