I had some problems lke this too
i've solved this with install of envyng drivers for my video card (nvidia 6100)
i hope this can help ;-)

i have a ati radeon 9000 mobil.
i tried envyng but it says my operating system is incompatible with the
driver.
more ideas?

no sorry,
im on linux since 10 years and i just buy nvidia graphic chipset for all my computers
drivers are really better than ati...
so maybe check the forums and the catalyst info page ...

Perhaps not the only thing, but proprietary drivers are a likely
suspect, mostly because they have caused so many headaches in the past.
Even Nvidia has at times not played nice, especially with RT kernels.

I would also comment out the rtprio and the nice lines in your
limits.conf.

If that works, re-enable things one at a time.

i have these limits.conf values because this was the way to get rt
priority for jack are there less "extreme" values or different ways to
get jack in rt mode?

Basically I would make one change at a time. Disable your entries in
limits.conf, use the nv instead of nvidia xorg driver. The last thing
you want to enable is the nvidia driver (ie. get a stable RT recording
rig before worrying about pretty visual effects). Maybe there are other
problems with your hardware that are the source of your troubles? This

i use the opensouce ati driver for my ati radeon 9000 mobil ... i don't
care about visual stuff ... displayconfig-gtk (and xorg X) doesn't whant
me to use closedsource drivers.
