Default Call for Testing: Ubuntu Server Quantal

Hi List

As you will probably have noticed, Ubuntu Quantal Beta 1 is now
available for testing:

http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.10/

The last part of the development cycle focusses on fixing bugs; so we
need as much help as possible identifying any potential bugs in the
packages that support Ubuntu Server before we release Quantal.

I'm not recommending you upgrade all of your servers to Ubuntu Quantal
now - its still a beta so will have some rough edges!

But it is a great point in time if you will be upgrading to Ubuntu
12.10 when its released to start testing for your upgrade - try out
the packages and configuration that you use in your production servers
on a test install of Ubuntu Quantal and see if things are still
working how you expect.

It's also worth trying out upgrades from 12.04; you can do this using
the 'do-release-upgrade -d' command.

Most importantly - please report any bugs you encounter!

on the right way to report a bug; sometimes we have published
debugging information which will help speed up the bug triage process
hugely and reporting bugs using the 'ubuntu-bug' command will
automatically collect quite a bit of data about your installation.

Default Call for Testing: Ubuntu Server Quantal

I just spent 10 minutes trying to figure out how to *actually report a
bug* on launchpad, and I give up.

The netboot images for amd64 appear to be broken -- they don't work on
either of my two test boxes (one an AMD, one an Intel). The AMD
hangs, the Intel reboots. Below is the config I'm using:

label ubuntu-quantal-amd64
kernel ubuntu-quantal-amd64/linux
append vga=normal initrd=ubuntu-quantal-amd64/initrd.gz -- quiet

The files in question were just downloaded today:

Hi George. There are two easy ways. If you are reporting a bug on a running
system, just run

ubuntu-bug [package name]

The package name is optional, but highly recommended so that apport knows
what extra info to attach.

Since you are reporting installer errors that might be hard to do, so go here:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu

And click "report a bug" on the right side.

Can you give more information on the details of your hardware so others can
try to reproduce?

in my circumstances:

Perhaps there's been a mistake, or perhaps some overly-zealous person
has decided that all bug reports need to come through "ubuntu-bug" or
something like that?

I wasn't sure what information would be helpful, and since it's failed
on two completely different kinds of processors, I figured it should
be easy to reproduce. Has anyone gotten it to work?

In any case, attached are the out put of "cpuid" and "dmesg" for my
AMD and Intel boxes when booted on the existing installations.
Unfortunately there's no serial output.

Default Call for Testing: Ubuntu Server Quantal

FWIW:
* The 32-bit version from Quantal works
* The 64-bit version from Precise works
* The sizes of the initrd.gz in the main directory of the mirror seems
to be a different size than the one in the netboot.tar.gz
- http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/initrd.gz
is 18314502 bytes
- In http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/netboot.tar.gz,
the file ubuntu-installer/amd64/initrd.gz is 32723375 bytes

Is it possible the initrd.gz for the 64-bit version got corrupted somehow?
