root@hawat:~# /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Just looked at the hosts file on my Intrepid server and localhost is
defined twice in there so that, e.g., ping6 localhost will work as
well as ping localhost.

I would flag that up as a bug in Apache. It's clearly not handling the
situation correctly where a name resolves into both an IPv6 address
and an IPv4 address.
