Default sony vaio vgn p11z running ubuntu

I have so far tried EVERY available solution for my vaio, and every
single one of them results in X's not being able to start normally.

Is there ANY way to get graphics to work on vaio vgn p11z? At the
moment, I would rather consider selling it, than using Windows, but
obviously I would prefer to keep it and to be able to use Ubuntu -
9.04 or 9.10, or even 10.04. I would be both fine with standard 32bit
and UNR editions - really, ANYTHING that would make it work nicely - I
want to use it only to browse net, do some basic work in Open Office
and occasionally watch a movie, no
need for compiz.

I am not a Ubuntu or Linux specialist, although I use Ubuntu as my
main operating system, so if you do have any solutions, please be
precise with them, preferably include a dumbproof manual

Regards and thanks in advance,
