update error
 

I'm getting errors doing apt-get update. Below is the console, and below that is the apt/sources.list file contents. Any idea what the problem is. I've had this work before.

Hello,

I ran the update process today on Hardy Heron, and after downloading I
was informed that the updates were unable to complete because the "dpkg:
status database area is locked by another process".

Anyone know how to recover from this?

Sure that it's not running in another window/console somewhere?

If you are really sure it's not running somewhere else (e.g. if you
reboot you will _know_ it's not running elsewhere) then you could
remove the lock file, but I bet you won't have to.

How do I delete the lock file, and then what do I do after that to
complete these updates?

Not withstanding the other reply which is correct, if your
sure you don't have another dpkg process running which you
can find by looking in your panel on console or by lsof then
just rm the lock file and your ready to go without rebooting.
rming the lock file will just about work in any case FTM.

BTW, in your post about promiscuous mode there are a hundred
or so google hits on the subject; the second of which probably
answers you question. I know you know about googling.

Once again, never mind... I just closed the error dialog in Update
Manager, ran the updates again, and they are now completing
successfully. Thanks for your quick answers before.

This problem exists for me sometimes if I exit and start Synaptic too quickly.
