E1000 invalid eeprom fix

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.What do y'all think about this patch? The correct fix is to reflash
eeprom on the device, but how many folks are gonna do that? I'm waiting
for confirmation from Chris Jones that it works on the boss' laptop.
