Default SRU: r8169 intermediate connection problems

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/324760
SRU justification:

Impact: There is a register which is only valid for r8169 chipsets but
currently gets used unconditionally. Also only the lower 3bits of that register
are valid.

Fix: Backport of upstream fix:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/jgarzik/netdev-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=523a609496dbc3897e530db2a2f 27650d125ea00;hp=e93dcb11dd6468000f2f018bd887e94b0 74ce931

Testcase: Manual network setup with r8169 based network card sometimes gets
connection problems as described below.

Reported by emgent:

The problem is that r8169 driver don't work fine in Hardy heron, some times
dhclient go to sleep and do not assign real IP Address. After reboot sometimes
work and sometimes not.

This issue has only be seen on ubuntu-server. This might be due to
NetworkManager does some tweaks to get around this.
