Please file bugs in the Ubuntu project and tag them with ubuntu-unr tag.

I'm afraid I didn't get the original OS.
I tried searching for user reports of this issue, and only found one
vague report ressembling what I see with Ubuntu, but with another linux
OS; can't really tell. I'll check whether I can reinstall the original
software from asus.com.

Based on the notes[1] I took, check the contents of /proc/acpi/wakeup
and look for something like "LID". If nothing maps to the lid, then I
think it's either a hardware limitation or a kernel ACPI bug. If it is
listed, but not marked "enabled", this is a software error (though I'm
not sure where exactly).

there's nothing identifiable as a lid device, and nothing is enabled.
I've filed https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/348012 to track this, and we
can figure out there whether this is a bug or not.

Note that in the Aspire One case I was describing, pressing a key doesn't
help (only the power button).
