Default X startup times: Jaunty vs. Moblin

Here's a boot-performance related challenge for X efficianados amongst
you.

The attached file black-jaunty-20090310-4_cropped.png shows a bootchart
for Jaunty on a Dell Mini 9.

You'll note that the Xorg server takes roughly four seconds to start
(from 9.5s to 13s) before it calls the X session manager, and thus
begins the login to GNOME.


The attached file white-moblina1-20090312-1.png shows a bootchart for
Moblin Core Alpha 1 on the same hardware.

You'll note that the Xorg server takes significantly less time to start,
in fact, roughly 1.5s (from 2s to 3.5s) before it calls the session
manager.


Why?

http://repo.moblin.org/moblin/releases/test/alpha1/source/ contains the
source RPMs for their distribution. Maybe they have some patches in
there?

The xorg-x11-drv-intel package has the following patches:

0001-make-UXA-as-default-accelmethod.patch
0002-avoid-duplicate-SaveHWState.patch
0003-reduce-driver-boottime.patch
0004-disable-sdvo-TV-port-remove-restoreHW.patch
0005-disable-check-lvds-panelpower-status.patch

I tried applying all of them to our xserver-xorg-video-intel package,
and the bootchart contains all but the UXA one (which really slowed the
world down).

So not those.


The xorg-x11-server package has the following patches:

The only one of those that seems boot performance related is the xkbcomp
patch (the boottime one is already applied to our X server and is about
logging timestamps in Xorg logs). I built our xorg-server package with
the xkbcomp patch, and that didn't help much.

So not those either.

Sure.

Attached.

The startup time is the same, but since their intel driver enables UXA -
this brings compiz to a crawl and the rest of the boot takes a few
seconds longer as a result.

Replacing the Xorg binary flat-out doesn't work, log attached.

The intel section of the log is still completely different from the moblin
log. It seems to do the same thing over and over. Is there anything in the
moblin xorg.conf?

No I doubt there's anything unusual in the xorg.conf.

The sequence of monitor probe stuff starting at 5.x seconds looks like
xrandr calls, almost certainly from some client program rather than from
X itself. Perhaps those are from gnome-settings-daemon? Do you have a
~/.config/monitors.xml on one system but not the other maybe?

Perhaps it would be best to try to start with a minimal X session on both moblin and jaunty to rule out userspace components that start after X, so you can compare raw Xorg startup time with the intel driver?

Could that be related to gnome-settings-daemon and perhaps other GNOME

Good point. I thought this was just the server startup, but I suppose it's
starting the desktop as well. In that case, there's only about a 1.5-second
difference:

The boot chart is much earlier in the thread, and you'll see that
nothing userspace starts until 4.5-5s in.

The messages being printed look very reminiscent of that class of issue,
although note in the log it's only one (well, two) sets of calls, so
that feels more like a one time thing such as you'd see during init.

As a general rule, the Xserver does video set up first, and then input
setup. So when you see monitor resolution messaging after input device
setup messages, that often indicates activity post-init.
