A perpetual goal of the Desktop Team is to try to reduce our patch
delta with upstream. GDM is one of the most heavily patched components
in Ubuntu that now is no longer being shipped by default on the main
CD. I'd like to see us at least reduce our delta with Debian to make
our maintenance easier.
Is Debian's renaming to gdm3 permanent? Using the same package names
makes looking at a diff quite a bit simpler, so I'd like to see us
follow Debian's naming practice.

Hey,
We started on that this cycle and dropped for example gdmsetup and some
other of your custome hacks, we can probably do better still though!

Yes, they said they would keep the source name like to avoid upgrading
users from one version to the new one, we could rename the source but we
shouldn't i.e rename the etc directory and break configs.

gdm3
Hi,
With new gdm3 entering testing, I have a problem with it. It does not
honour ~/.dmrc, where I could have set my desktop of choice. Looking
around found that ~/.dmrc is no longer the place to set the wm/de of
choice.
Frustrated, installed lightdm. It also has the same problem. Every time
I login, I have to select the de/wm. Any pointers for getting over this
problem?
If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it's still a foolish thing.

Now is located at "/var/lib/AccountsService/users/your_username", I guess.

It works fine here. After I select a session type (gnome/fallback mode/
whatever) it is remembembered for the next login.

I'm still not seeing any choice on the login pulldown menu for desktop choice.
How do I invoke it from CLI, after killing the Xserver, using startx into xfce ?

That's an unfortunate Debian-induced confusion.
Squeeze has a GDM that's called "gdm3" and that's version 2.30.
Since October (AFAIK), sid's had a GDM that's called gdm3 and that's
version 3.0.4. So it must've been dropped into wheezy more recently.

Richard, IIRC your problem it's being discussed in another thread, let's
continue there to avoid hijacking this.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger! :-)
I don't know the why/reason of this, just read it somewhere, possibly in
a Debian bug report.

Yep, but testing (wheezy) has been using gdm3 (3.x) as the default since
long, long time ago. I suppose because gdm (2.x) is going to be dropped
in a near future.
