It does not for me and hence the mail :-) Checked the above directory
and my session is correctly reflected there, but I still get logged in
to gnome.

What's the content of your "/var/lib/AccountsService/users/your_username"
file? And what's the output of "ls -la /usr/share/xsessions"?
And what's the problem now, a) that you cannot select the session from
the dropdown menu because is not visible, b) that while you select your
session type you are logged into GNOME or c) that the last selected
session is not kept for the next login? :-)
Also, try to create a fresh new user and check if it works from there.

Ah! You're right :-O
I didn't notice we've been using the older version (2.30) all this time,
maybe because gdm3 3.0.4 and 2.30.5 share a very similar UI and
configuration options.
But now you mention... the recent update that pulled gnome-shell also
pulled this package. I remember I was asked by the updater routine if I
wanted to keep the old configuration files or updating to the new ones.

Having gdm be renamed gdm3 when gdm moved from 2.20 to 2.30 wasn't
helpful in this context...

The answer is (c). My selection is not remembered and I have to do it
every time I login.

This looks right, I mean, it is set to the last run session.

Ah, okay then. Let's search for any related bug... Mmm, there is one
quite similar:
***
After upgrade to gdm3 session selection defaults to "system default"
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=648220
***
Maybe you can add your comments there :-?

Addes a "me too" to that report :-)
