Default Default bookmarks for Firefox and Chromium

Hi,

A few weeks ago, philinux from ubuntuforums approached me with a
suggestion that we should think about updating the default bookmarks in
Firefox, and I suggested opening a bug report with some ideas for new
defaults on. With hindsight in mind, a bug report probably isn't the
best venue for discussing these things, and there has only been a
handful of suggestions so far.

Currently, we ship 4 extra bookmarks to the vanilla Firefox profile (I'm
not sure whether we add any bookmarks to the default Chromium profile
too, but we probably should do if we don't already). These are:

http://www.ubuntulinux.org/
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/ (although the link for this one is currently
broken, but fixed in bzr)
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
http://www.debian.org/

Do people think these are a good set of defaults, and if not - do they
have any ideas for other bookmarks they think should be there by default
(or think that any shouldn't be there)? I'm open to suggestions,
although I'm reasonably happy with what we have currently.

Regards
Chris

Default Default bookmarks for Firefox and Chromium

Bookmarks in firefox should support pin/unpin.i also believe that more than 5 pre-pinned objects per default would be too much. The demo (affordance) of pin/unpin support should rather be of a design so obvious, that even one single example bookmark is sufficient to illustrate the purpose of bookmarks as a whole.

Apart from that, i see no reason why these or any other popular FOSS websites should not be featured here..
My new personal rule #1 for the presentation of content applies:

Allow each participant to decide which objects deserve attention and hide the rest intelligently...

I think we should stick with official and semi-official (ubuntuforums)
Ubuntu/Debian sites.
So, the Fridge might make a decent addition, since this is where Ubuntu

What's the rational behind:https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
http://www.debian.org/? Do people really read the Answers part of Launchpad, and if so, would the devs really want people going there for support instead of the Ubuntu Forums (they are kind of busy, after all)? Also, why is Debian in there at all? Is this a courtesy to them since they're our upstream? I don't really understand why a casual Ubuntu user would need to go to debian.org, especially enough to warrant a default bookmark.

The Answers part of Launchpad is specifically designed for users to ask
questions and request support for their problems, and we want to
encourage the use of that. If we didn't want users to ask questions,
then there would be no point in providing the service.

Having said that, the Answers bookmark seems to be a little bit
redundant - most applications (Firefox included) already have a "Get
Help Online..." entry in the Help menu.

I do!

Granted, it doesn't get as much traffic as it should, but I think it's
a really unique service. Everything is organized in a very detailed
way, a question can be linked directly to a bug report, a FAQ entry,
etc.
In addition, every application with Get Help Online in its help menu
points to Launchpad Answers for that package in Ubuntu.

Looking at https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ , I see ten
questions asked within the last hour, of which only two are without
responses so far.

The service is way better organized than a support forum, so it's
excellent at specific questions. For more general questions and
constructive discussions, something less organized works better. That
is where Ubuntu Forums comes in.

I think the service should be promoted, and certainly not given up on.

I think the user deserves some liberty to be without advertisement when he chooses to. That said, please consider the possibility of updating the default or "pinned" bookmarks in a way useful to the user first, then useful to you as a developer.

Users are greatful for the existence of debian community sites, but that doesn't mean that they need to visit them more often than any other interesting websites such as whitehouse.gov or kernel.org.

as long as "default" bookmarks don't support unpinning on the foremost face of the bookmarking system (i.e. the bookmarks toolbar, sidebar and menu), i think it doesn't help the user understand the concept of bookmarking usefully to display FOSS links, Community pages or what have you in that place...

So, why don’t we promote some other free & open projects there?
Off the top of a list of bookmarks I keep at http://j.mp/free-bookmarks

http://identi.ca
http://titanpad.com
http://libre.fm
http://wikipedia.org

http://flossmanuals.net

http://oercommons.org
http://theleagueofmoveabletype.com
http://openfontlibrary.org

http://wikitravel.org

http://couchsurfing.org
http://freecycle.org

When
they already have Ubuntu, we should help them dive deeper into the free
society. I know it took long for me to get to know all these massively
useful sites.

On the current bookmarks:
Why ubuntulinux.org and not just call it ubuntu.com like it is everywhere else?
Launchpad
answers should definitely stay! The direct connection to everything
else (including frequently asked questions) makes it much easier to
operate than a forum.

I’m not entirely sure on Debian. If that is there, GNOME should be too.
