I'm testing new gdm (2.24) from PPA on jaunty alpha 4. I use a french
keyboard layout.
When gdm start or restart after a logout, the layout is the good one :
french as configured during jaunty installation. But after the login,
the environnement variable GDM_KEYBOARD_LAYOUT is set to "us" and in
gnome-keyboard-properties, there is an USA keyboard. I have to set
"reset to default" in gnome-keyboard-properties to get back the correct
layout.
Otherwise in works well.
Here is my small feedback.
Thanks

Thank you for this report! It could be
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=561771
or
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556241
but I think they aren't quite the same as your's.
gnome-settings-daemon reads $GDM_KEYBOARD_LAYOUT, so it seems gdm sets
that wrongly. Could you please create a new bug report at

Not sure what info hal has about the keyboard, but it certainly doesn't
know about the layout chosen by the user in the combobox of gdm :-)

well, with recent xorg hal sets all the systemwide kbd settings (the
stuff formerly done in xorg.conf) so imho the hal data should be the
default value for GDM_KEYBOARD_LAYOUT in any case ... unless thats
overridden by a user setting indeed ...

BTW, please note that with our current (2.20) gdm, we are not using
$GDM_KEYBOARD_LAYOUT at all.
