Default xscreensaver stops running

I have a problem with the xscreesaver which seems to stop running intermittently. When you try to lock the screen, nothing happens. Once you go to "preferences --> Screensaver" the following message appears:
"The XScreenSaver daemon doesn't seem to be running on display "0:0". Launch it now?"

One you click "OK" the process starts and things are back to normal. Note this is a regular user not "root".
Has anyone experience this problem on RHEL4 with xscreensaver version 4.18?
Would appreciate any ideas on how to correct the problem.
