Beginning this weekend we're are going to be making some potentially
disruptive changes to edge's UI. A lot of what you will see
initially will be polished over several releases.
As a reminder, to disable redirection to edge, you can go to
https://launchpad.net and click on the "disable redirection for 2
hours" button at the top of the page.

Hi Joey,
what is the reason for the long queue of pending members for the beta
testers team? After all, it is being advertised on the home page as
"join today".
Of course, I am in that queue, too. ;-) But others have been in it much
longer.

Beta Testers: Changes to Edge
Hi Henning,
Thanks for the heads up. We usually go through that list a few times a
week but since we rolled out on Monday I don't think we've had a
chance to look at it.
I'll make sure it's done by Monday.

Beta Testers: Changes to Edge
Hi,
I have a little complain about a recent change and I thought I'd
mention it here...
Since some days user's /+packages lists only show up to 50 items for
each section (50 maintained/50 uploads/50 ppa). I think that if you do
this change there should still be a "show all..." option, not only
because the user itself may want to see what he has done in the past
but because if the applies to something
(ubuntu-contributing-developer/MOTU/Core Dev) it's good to have a list
of everything he has done...
Well, just my 5 cents...
Regards,

Hi Joey,
I'm looking forward to see all this changes to edge's UI.
But as a user of launchpad I would like to understand this changes.
Understanding them would help me to feel more comfortable with the new
UI and to provide you some kind of feedback. For example I would like
to know the reason for moving the portlet on bugpages from the left to
the right side, why the colour on all the pages is loosing more and
more contrast (light grey on white background) or if the some ten
pixel wide border around all pages is a bug or intended.
To achieve this it would be nice if there could be a kind of public
changelog or NEWS file with entries like
build 6629:
* moved portlet from left to right side, just for testing, waiting
for feedback
* replaced dark grey element by light ones to be more readable
Have a nice weekend,
Markus

Agreed with Markus so that we do not file all those intended with
reason changes as bugs. =)

Wow you weren't kidding when you mentioned changes to Edge.* Everything that was on the right, karma summary, email, GPG keys, etc is now on the left?* Was there usability testing done that suggested this change?* What other reasons behind this?

Yes, I was also wondering why it was changed... Also I noticed the
whole page seems to be framed, with little white striped on every
side, is that supposed to be there in the final version?

What you see today (Monday) on Edge is the beginning of a redesigned
interface for Launchpad.
==> It's not the final interface. <==
We're going to be landing successive updates to get us very close to
our final design. The new UI layout was created based upon feedback
from our usability study conducted at UDS Boston along with many UI
related bugs reported against Launchpad. While the interim changes
will lack polishing and mind be confusing at first, we hope the final
interface will be well received.
Additionally, we have other UI improvements under design which we
think might be ready in December/January.

Hi everyone
Joey's written about what's happening to the Launchpad interface in
general, so I'll follow up with a few of the details.

Some pages in Launchpad contain little grey boxes ("portlets"), while
others do not. On launchpad.net at the moment, pages containing these
boxes have them in a column on the left. This means that the position of
the main heading and text is inconsistent, between those pages that have
the boxes and those pages that don't.
So what we're trying on edge.launchpad.net is putting the boxes on the
right. This means that the main heading and text for almost every page
starts in the same place.
>> why the colour on all the pages is loosing more and more contrast
>> (light grey on white background)
The only color change at the moment is that the grey boxes no longer
have a white-on-dark-grey heading.
>> or if the some ten pixel wide border
>> around all pages is a bug or intended.
The main change to the margins is that the green location bar now has
whitespace around it, to make it eaiser to see. During user testing last
year I noticed that people rarely used the location bar. I think this
was because it was touching the edges of the page, which made it look
like something people were supposed to ignore.

None of those are on the left now, that I can see. Anyway, the personal
profile pages are currently being redesigned, so the current pages are
temporary.
> Was there usability testing done that suggested this change?

The changes made so far fix many bugs that have been reported about
Launchpad over the past three years. Other changes coming soon will fix
further bugs.
Cheers
