Default testing microphone in KDE

Don't laugh but I have a problem of wanting to test if the mic on my
laptop works after installing 8.04 but I can not think of a "built-in"
app to do this. Any suggestions anyone??

I have used Skype for this successfully.* It helps you test your microphone to be sure you are ready for VoIP.

tried Skype and I have no luck/success - I THINK I hear like a whisper
somewhere when I try the test-call

You may have to play around with the settings in KMix.

It is in package alsa-utils. I thought it was installed by default, but
obviously it isn't - sorry for any confusion.
