Default Installing and newbies

2008/5/8 Neil Winchurst <neil@holsdev.vispa.com>:

After eighteen months with Edgy I did a fresh install of Gutsy last

week. It went well though I had a lot to do once I had restarted the

computer.

I set numlock to turn on at boot.

I changed the mouse to double click for icons.

I had to add a user since I did not get the choice to do so during

the install.

I had to set up my printer. It was turned on during the install but

was not found.

I had to play with kmix to get sound to work.

I made konqueror the default file manager instead of dolphin.

I commented out the reference to the install CD which was in

sources.list.

The following programs were not included with the install so I added

them afterwards :-

firefox, thunderbird, opera, gnucash, kedit, kdf, mysql, gimp, Sun

java, flash.

OK, so some of those were personal choices, but I was

very surpised that FF, the Gimp and Thunderbird were missing from the

install.

And the point of all this? Well, after my experience with Edgy and, in

all, six years using Linux all the above was simple. But for someone

new to Linux I think they would need some hand-holding to get

started. I still feel that more needs to be done to get newcomers to

feel confident with Linux.

What do other people on the list think?

still. that is easier thatn dealing with windows, windows doesnt come with an* office suite for an instance. i agree with the web browser problem, but it is now fixed in hardy. i find installing printers a pice of cake, since i dont need any drivers, wheareas on windows, it will not install the printer during the windows installation or after it unless you insert the driver CD.

kmix might be an issue here, a lot of people are complaining that sound is not working without kmix editing. gimp is a bit of a big program to include, but so is the case in windows, you get lousy paint, not photoshop!

the fact is that you still need to be a bit familiar with computers to install a system, whatever the OS is, at least you can get all what is missing in kubuntu while you are sitting on your chair, no need to buy CDs or anything. i started using linux with kubuntu feisty last summer. i'm already familiar now with much of the concepts, and dont really find it hard. it took me 3 years to become an advanced user on windows. i wont say that im an advanced linux user, but im learning it fast.

P.S. how do you set numlock on startup?

I would say all of these are your personal choices ;-)

As it stands Kubuntu has chosen Konqueror as the standard web browser
and Kmail/Kontact as standard mail client. As for Gimp I am uncertain
why it is not there though I guess Krita would be a more natural choice.

I dont remember Edgy any longer myself but are you sure Thunderbird,
Firefox and Gimp were there when you installed or you have since added them?

This is Kubuntu not Ubuntu, so the choices of software are of course
going to be KDE choices. We have Kmail and Konqueror as defaults.
Flash and Java cannot be included for obvious free software reasons.

System Settings -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Keyboard

Under 'NumLock on KDE Startup' select Turn On.

I still wonder why the default is to leave it turned off.

I can't stand kmail so I use sylpheed and tbird.

In gutsy konqueror was not the default, it was dolphin. Since I
prefer Konq as my file manager I changed the default.

I have never used Krita, only Gimp so I can't comment here.

Like you, it is so long ago I can no longer remember. I like konq as
my file manager but not as a web browser. And I don't like kmail at
all.

I agree, though, we are so lucky with Linux to have plenty of choice.

Us laptop users are not too overly keen on having NumLock switched on...
messes up the typing a lot.

I've always assumed that it's to keep the size of the distribution
down. I used to use Fedora which, I think, was up to 5 CDs to
download and burn, which was a PITA.

Personally, I much prefer to have a single CD to install the basic
system, then install the extras I want over the Internet.

I got one reason for why its turned off as default. On my laptop where
the num-keys is my regular keys it would really make it hard to write
normal characters.

I would go along with that except, when I used to use
Mandrake/Mandriva and before that Suse, the numlock was always on at
the end of booting up the computer. I never had to make any changes
or to turn it on manually.
