Truer understatements were never spoken. :-)

>(and how does he justify taking a laptop from a needy child, anyway?).

Because he is free to do so, of course. :-)

The OLPC was originally a "buy one for you, and one for a needy child"
promotion, wasn't it? I know of others who bought one (I refer to
podcasters who say they have one)

Same here.

Well, technically, that wasn't the court's decision, nor the real reason
for the case, but I happen to agree with you.

Personally, I think Gnome as an environment sucks. The apps are pretty
good, usually, but the whole is just distasteful to me.

The beauty of Linux - choice ...

You are free to download OpenOffice for Windows, just as you are free to
do so on Linux.

Or you could just download the drivers, which Kubuntu has helpfully
already done for you ... That's the way I always do it ...

So download the GiMP for Windows, what's the problem?

Depending on what you need, you may not have to purchase anything for
Windows, either, as there are open source office suites, graphic
editors, web browsers, mail clients, etc, available for Windows.

Because I feel that at the moment Hardy still has some problems,
being somewhat cutting edge. I do have the CDs and plan a dual boot
install soon

Also, on Hardy, FF is version 3 which has been causing some problems
according to comments on the list.

I agree with you, I will never choose Gnome. However, I don't
understand this business of 'they're not KDE apps'. I use the Gimp
for example, which I am told is not a KDE app. So what?? Am I missing
something again here?

I have installed kubuntu on my brother's laptop, for example, but I
have the CD so I have commented out the reference to the CD for him
too. And I am surprised by the above information about the CD being
the preference if the versions are the same. I wonder why.

Because we do not all live in "broadband wonderland"... I share a 256k
DSL with 10 others at work and only have dialup at home. Then you LOVE
to install from CD rather than internet.

Point taken. Now I understand and accept the need for it. I forget
that some people still do not have access to broadband in this
country. BT have a lot to answer for.

Or Maggie Thatcher, in this case. Way back in the mists of time, BT was
intending to recable the country with fibre optic cable. Maggie vetoed it.

Then came privatisation's focus on quick profit and competition, and BT too
dropped the idea.
