Default sound lost after Hardy upgrade

I recently upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy. Everything went well... I
needed to unmute my sound and replace Firefox-3 with Firefox-2 but that
wasn't very hard.

Due to a power outage, my machine crashed. When I rebooted, there was
no sound. I went through all the steps I could think of - KControl,
alsamixer, log-out and -in, even reboot again... still no sound.

I've run out of ideas... can anyone help?

What type are your soundcard? What do cat /proc/asound/cards say?
Is the right modules loaded? Check with lsmod.
Some clues in dmesg or the log-files?

Everything seems OK to me... but I'm not a power user...

Default sound lost after Hardy upgrade

I also had no sound after upgrading to Hardy from Gutsy.

Check this forum for troubleshooting sound problems:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

What my problem was, was that the sound module was not being loaded.
I added 'snd-hda-intel' to the end of my /etc/modules file, and I got
sound immediately, without rebooting.
If you go through the steps in that post, you can determine which
driver module your sound card uses and then add it
to the end of /etc/modules.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Geoff bays

Default sound lost after Hardy upgrade

i also had no sound after upgrading to hardy from gutsy, but my problem was only with kmix, i raised the sound levels of verything in kmix (except one of the mics since it created feedback), and sound was working again! but the weird thing is that if i click the sound icon in kicker, the bar that shows up has no effect on the sound, raising or lowering it creates no difference!

2008/5/7 Geoffrey Bays <charioteer7@gmail.com>:

I also had no sound after upgrading to Hardy from Gutsy.

Check this forum for troubleshooting sound problems:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

What my problem was, was that the sound module was not being loaded.

I added 'snd-hda-intel' to the end of my /etc/modules file, and I got

sound immediately, without rebooting.

If you go through the steps in that post, you can determine which

driver module your sound card uses and then add it

to the end of /etc/modules.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Geoff bays

Thanks for the link. I checked out the how-to, but everything it
suggested either had already been tried, or didn't need doing.

My card needs snd-hda-intel, too.. but an lsmod shows that it's already
there.

That's what happened immediately on upgrade. I fixed that problem with
alsamixer...

Wulfy:
My lsmod also showed that snd-hda-intel was there, but it was not being loaded.
Check /etc/modules and add it to the end if it is not already
there.Otherwise the module will not be loaded.

I have a TV card as well as a soundcard, and the sound module for that shows
up as a second card in /proc/asound/cards. On one of my distros I found that
the volume control, like you, had no effect on the volume.

If you also have 2 cards, as I have. Right click on the volume control in the
panel, and there will be choices there as to which card you want to use the
volume control for.

Just a thought.
