You don't say whether she is using Network Manager or WICD. If Network
Manager, have her switch to WICD. It has been approved by many users as
better than NM.
I have BCM4312 card and use it for several years with Network Manager not
having a singly issue. Though all this experience is in GNOME. Can it be
different in KDE? I would be surprised.
Could it be a conflict, I also have a broadcom card and I had to
blacklist so that the "free" driver and the propriatary does not both
try to control the card.
In my /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf I have these 3 lines added:
blacklist bcma
blacklist brcmsmac
blacklist brcmutil
I had to add this in 11.10 already as that was then ubuntu for whatever
reason did not automagically remove the free driver when you install the
broadcom driver
