Erratic mouse behavior in 12.04
 

Sorry to confuse you, I wasn't at the computer (using tablet). What I
was thinking of was "Automatically select icons". As I understand it,
if it's selected just hovering (staying motionless) over an icon
selects it and then it behaves just as if you had clicked it. I've
never used that behaviour and I don't think you want it. If that
checkbox is selected then uncheck it. If not, I'm sorry but I'm lost
too!

I just tested that setting and it didn't seem to do anything, so I
really don't know what is going on with Kubuntu. Thankfully, for me,
everything works well and I don't have the problems you have
experienced. Do you use some kind of proprietary mouse driver? Can't
think of anything else to try.

This system uses hybrid graphics (nvidia optimus), but I'm currently
running Intel graphics only. I've seen some solutions around the net
to activate and use the nvidia GPU, but haven't tried any of them yet.
So far, Intel graphics is doing good for what I need, so activating
the nvidia GPU is not a priority right now.
After my first post, I've noticed that all those pointer problems go
away if I disable the system's touchscreen device. Therefore, it seems
that the mouse and the touchscreen are fighting each other. Now I'm
trying to get rid of the problems while keeping a working touchscreen.

Good luck then in your quest for the solution.

But one of the things which *I* would have done is to install the proper
nVidia driver which would then at least eliminate one possible cause of
the problem; if this did not solve the problem then you can go on and
keep looking for the cause knowing that it is not the nVidia driver.


But then, you know best.

It's not that I'm ignoring your suggestion, it's just that it's not so simple
to test it. Right now, Xorg can't even see the nvidia GPU. It is "disabled",
so to speak (not exactly, is on and consuming power, but it's invisible for
the system). Only the Intel GPU is visible and this is the driver X loaded,
not nouveau. The proper nvidia driver does not find the nvidia GPU neither.
I've seen two solutions for activating the nvidia GPU in a system with nvidia
optimus technology:

https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bumblebee

All those transformers :) seem great, but it takes some time to make them
work. This is not a priority for me at the moment and, since the nvidia GPU is
invisible for the system and the loaded driver is the Intel one, it doesn't
seem like the problems are caused by the video driver, specially if they all
go alway when the touchscreen is off.
But eventually I'll make the nvidia GPU work...

This does not make much sense. Hybrid graphics means that
you can select "Intel"; "Nvidia" and "Switch according to
graphics power that is needed". At least some of the Vaios
at the company I do work for, are layed out like this.


As long as he is unsing "Intel", this in fact is an Intel
Laptop with Intel Graphics. No Nvidia and no Nvidia Driver
needed or used.
