Hi Rajubhai,

With a wired connection there are far fewer variables to check out, but all have to be correct. You are not using VirtualBox, Wubi or some other virtual machine for one of the installations are you? That brings in additional complications. How old is/are the machine(s) you are using?

You don't say specifically that you have both operating systems in a single dual boot machine. Is that the case? If so the network adapter will be identical (obviously!) but if not you could have a slightly different version even if the manufacturer is the same. If on a different machine did it ever work for you, with any operating system? If different can you borrow a friend's laptop and see if it works on that network cable?

Wiggle the cable at both the computer end and the router or hub end. Inspect the cable and RJ-45 connectors for wires that are pulled out or the insulation damaged. A lot of problems are caused by cabling defects.

How do you get your IP addresses? Is it from your home router by DHCP (the default) or is it set statically for the other operating system? Are there other systems on the local network that might be causing an IP address conflict?

Did you set up the 10.10 system yourself? If so it works the same in 11.04. I'm assuming there is only one network adapter in the box.

What happens when you ping 127.0.0.1 or localhost in a terminal? If there is a valid IP address it will return some data until you stop it with Control-C. If not then something isn't set up correctly.

As far as I know the 11.04 kernel supports every network adapter that 10.10 supports, without any additional driver being needed.

Why not go right up to 11.10? It is a little more up to date than 11.04 and might work. Since Kubuntu comes out with a new version every April and October you might have better luck trying 12.04 late next month. I hope you know that the Website (http://www.kubuntu.org/)*has the recent versions, free to download and burn to your own CD.

Have *you tried the live CD for other operating systems? No need to install it to test it out. I recommend Puppy Linux (http://puppylinux.com/)*as it is small and fast. Network setup is a little different with Puppy but it may give you some ideas where the problem might lie.

Try out some of these ideas and get back to us. Good luck!

Leslie Anne
