Routine update left me stuck in run level 3

If you have X, from a terminal as root do startx and check the error
messages. You should be able to work from there.
Depending on your distribution there will be a conf file for X.
For me (Fedora) the X11 files are in /etc/X11 and I think the conf file
is in xorg.conf.d, but I have no conf file because it just works.
