Default Black screen after 4.5 update

Hi all,

After being back from vacation, I decided to go for the 4.5 update.* Meanwhile I got KPackage message for other bugfixes and updates. Without thinking, I added the 4.5 repository and started the update. What happened is that KPackage removed some tens of packages (I don't know which), and did not installed some 100+ others.

After restarting (as the new Linux kernel was installed), I have a black screen with mouse pointer in the middle; no further actions.

I started recovery mode and dpkg showed some broken packages that were repaired. However, still a black screen.

My suggestion is that due to KPackage earlier removal of some packages, I have a bunch not installed. Is that correct and if so what can I do?

Any ideas/help is appreciated as this happened on my main production machine which is now useless. Thanks.

After some sleepless hours I found a solution:

1. Logged in. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (went to terminal)
2. sudo apt-get update
3. sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
4. Restart

More or less the same as described in this bug:
