I used to use workrave until I realised I was never actually taking
the breaks. Using a trackball and an erconomic MS keyboard (the only
MS product I willingly use) appears to have done the trick.

Thanks, looking into it. I also use a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard,
which I've modified to reduce the spring pressure on the pinky and
ring fingers, as well as adding a soft latex layer to the keytops. I
love it to death, I find it hard to type on anything else.
Thanks!

Get a life. Then you won't need reminding to spend some of it elsewhere than in front of a computer

Doesn't work. Life led to marriage, which led to kids, which led to
responsibility to bring home food (money), which led me right back to
the computer. It's a wasted effort!

How about a combination of ktimer and kdialog?
Ktimer is super simple but fulfills the countdown need well. I don't know if
"scheduled" breaks would work for your purposes, but you might be able to
accomplish what you want with cron too.
Kdialog has a lot of uses and options. Here's some examples:
kdialog --sorry "Sorry to interrupt, but it's time for a break."
kdialog --passivepopup "Sorry to interrupt, but it's time for a break."
Depends on how disruptive you want it to be.

Well, the coffee _prevented_ me from taking a break, and knowing that
there is beer in the fridge doesn't let me take my mind off the break.
