Hello, Billie --
I recently bought a Wacom Bamboo tablet. The working area is 6" by
3.75". The tablet is connected to the computer by a USB cable -- mini
(as in telephone-style) at the tablet and standard at the computer. I
connected the thing and it worked right out of the box for me.
There are a couple of "cautions" that I should really mention. The first
is that, although it works on things in the system tray, it does NOT
work with desktop icons; I really MUST open those with a real rodent.
NOT good.
The second is that I have NOT even attempted to install any of the
software that came with it; my basic purpose was simply to back off from
a somewhat hostile "mouse".
The third is that I do not do any graphics manipulation, hand-writing,
or similar work; as i said, I want to replace the mouse for simple and
everyday purposes (for me!).
Fourth, I am running Kubuntu Jaunty (9.04), NOT up-to-date. I also have
VirtualBox OSE installed and, under that, WinXP-Pro. The reason for
this is that I have a very powerful Bible study package (with an
extensive library of unlocked books) which will NOT be ported to *ix. I
can start VB (it has an icon on the Tray) and launch WinXP with no
difficulty. I have to use the mouse to launch the program from the WinXP
desktop -- but everything is controlled via the pen from that time on.
I have been informed that this "desktop" issue is known and documented,
but I have neither searched for nor found any details. But I am
satisfied, at least for now!
I will be happy to help if I can, but I would have to know what problems
you are facing -- and what you want to accomplish -- before I could go
much further. And I might have nothing to say, even with that info!

Like Bruce mentioned, my Wacom Bamboo worked right out of the box on my
9.10 Kubuntu. There is a control panel that you can install. Just do a
search in Synaptic for Wacom and you'll find the control panel. The pad
worked even before I installed the control panel.

I bought the Pen and Touch model. My main reason was to use it for
graphics editing/creation.
According to the documentation Wacom "supports" Linux by supplying
whatever information for an outside group to create whatever is needed
to make it work. Supposedly the new kernels have some driver support for
Wacom tablets built in but for full functionality you have to do some
rather invasive system manipulation. Something like ten, or so, web
pages of instruction/information. I've tried to follow the instructions
but ................... Lets just say I get confused about what I'm
supposed to do and what is just information. I am not proficient with
the command line and what it says is mostly gibberish as far as I'm
concerned.
They supposedly have an e-mail support list but the subscription doesn't
seem to work.

You still haven't told us what don't work. I have a Wacom Bamboo and
it works without any configuration when using it as a mouse and almost
everything when working in Gimp.
The System settings module [1] mention previous is good if you want to
configure the buttons on the pad and/or pen.
What are the instructions you trying to follow?

Okay, when I looked at the Wacom site I did see some How-tos that
require you to use the command line. Remember that Bruce and I said that
our units worked right out of the box. I certainly didn't need to do any
of that to get my unit to work. I don't see where it says you get
something extra by going through the How-Tos that I saw. It says to do
those things if your pad doesn't work. So the obvious question is did
you try the pad and the pen before you changed anything?
Did you install the Control Panel using Synaptic or something else?
Using the Control Panel, you can configure the Tablet just like it shows
you in the manual. My pen and pad worked even before I installed the
Control Panel.

I saw Wacom Tools in Synaptic last night but didn't install because the
instructions on the web site said to remove anything to do with Wacom. I
installed it just a few minutes ago but see no way to use it in the menu
system. I even rebooted the computer with the pad plugged in just in
case hot-plugging wasn't it's thing.
Mine does absolutely nothing when it's plugged in. It won't function as
a touch pad and the pen doesn't show any effect either. It's like it
isn't plugged in but the light is on.
I'm sure it's not the pad because it works well in Windows.
The USB port works with other devices under Linux/Kubuntu so I'm sure
the port is fine.

That page is the compile and install details for the kernel drivers and the utilities. You shouldn't need to go through any compile or install, you should just install the appropriate packages.

There are only two Wacom packages. Both are now installed and it is
about as dead as disco. Does nothing when plugged in. Obviously
something important is missing.
