Default problem converting to ext3 file system

hello all,
I want to convert from NTFS to ext3 to be able to install Kubuntu and make it work. I have installed it through Wubi on a separate NTFS drive and it when I try to install it from the Kubuntu on NTFS( the one installed through wubi) it says: "no root file system defined"..I have made about 512 mb's unalocated space to be swap and just want to format the NTFS drive as ext3 to install Kubuntu on this separate drive (its about 28.5 GB's) and when I try to install Kubuntu through booting from cd its after choosing the language ,>>install Kubunto >> then the first page installing after "Kubuntu" sign it makes an error before starting the setup
what can i do?

Default problem converting to ext3 file system

Hello,

You cannot convert NTFS to ext3 partition.
You can delete your NTFS partition and then create ext3 partition
If you want to keep data from NTFS partition, then you need space for
new ext3 partition in order to copy under Linux data from NTFS to ext3
and then delete NTFS partition.

During Kubuntu installation, what is the error message?

Arnaud.

Sorry, I didn't realized that you want to install through Wubi; with
Wubi, your ext3 will be a file in NTFS.
Take a look to this page for more detail how to proceed:
http://www.brighthub.com/computing/linux/articles/14039.aspx
I've never do it personally.

1. Please don't top post, thereby scrambling the normal conversational flow
of the message.

2. Man mke2fs is your friend. You have not actually built a filesystem yet
on that partition of the drive.

3. Please trim old, no longer needed text from your postings. We don't need
to see it 117 times by the time the thread wears itself out.

Ok
If you want dual boot:
- with Gparted, you resize NTFS partition to make enough free room
on your disk to install Kubuntu (15Gb or more)
- with Kubuntu CD, install and choose to used free space
If you want Kubuntu only
- don't need Gparted
- with Kubuntu CD, install and choose to used the full drive

I'm with you Arnaud, I wouldn't touch NTFS with any pole I can lift.

NTFS is entirely too fond of picking a file, any file, at random, but the
randomness seems heavily biased toward important files that can only be
recovered by a full wipe & full reinstall, and summarily deleting them. You
only find out its gone on the next reboot & it won't even reboot. Been
there, done that, bought the T shirt AND a new copy of NT at full list price
for an important machine at the TV station, 3 d-----d times. Ask M$ for just
that file & they just sort of chuckle and say to go buy a legal copy. The
copy that destroyed itself was also a 100% legal copy. CD's just get thrown
away, so I now duct tape the cd to the inside of the case. I have come to
the conclusion this 'feature' may even be an easter egg of sorts. And
without the src's, how are you to prove/disprove it? Can't. But the
evidence is sure there...

well I formatted a drive to ext3 with Gparted but didn't make swap for the unallocated space ( I was hesitated because it was going to be primary, my windows drive is also primary) so I was scared to lose data.. it says the same error when I try to install it through booting cd (Unable to find a medium containing a live file system) what shall I do?

Whilst I agree in principle - Re-partition if you can, I just want to add another view which is I have used wubi installations in a number of places I'm not allow (or don't wish) to repartition the drive, and I've not had any of the issues discussed above. I also don't think it is normal for windows to randomly delete files... Maybe the common factor in all the machine above is Gene himself
