Thanks for this suggestion. While you wrote this, I tried each of the
F-buttons immediately after powering on. And you are right: at my
little Asus, it's also the F2 button which gives access to BIOS!.
After modifying a few BOOT settings, I did manage to boot from the USB
stick. I tried a 'live' version of Kubuntu Netbook remix 9.10. And I
immediately liked it. So, I will install this distro later today.
A few practical questions remain in this stage.
What best to do with the USB stick?
One option I think about is simply booting again with it with a view
to starting the installation procedure.
A 2nd option I have in mind is making a 'fresh' copy of the Kubuntu
9.10 netbook remix live image via usb-creator-kde, before again
booting and starting the installation procedure.
Which of either options would you recommend me with respect to the USB-stick?
What about the battery during the installation procedure? Is there any
security measure I need to take? Is there anything I need to think
about?
OK, this is it for now. Thanks again everybody for your useful feedback.
Respectfully yours,
Bas.

On my Ausus one the
entering into bios for permanent changes of the bios is done by
pressing F2. To change the order of booting pressing F12 gives a boot
order menu.
*Maybe that will help.

This is interesting. When pressing either F8, or 'delete' or 'esc',
immediately after powering on,I only get Windows related upstart
stuff.
'F8'delivers a menu of 'start up options' with respect to Win7: safe
mode and several other option related to that OS.
'Del delivers 'select the OS you want to start' - with only one choice...
'Esc' delivers a mixture of the above mentioned stuff or the so-called
'Windows failure recovery'.
But NO BIOS so far!!! ????? !!!!
On mine the key is F2, which needs to be pressed during the first splash
screen.

Hello everybody
Tonight, I installed Kubuntu 9.10 netbook remix. However, I simply do
not manage to come into the system - the password/ login combination I
have in mind, does not work. Do you know any workaround enabling me to
come into the system??
Thanks for replying,
Bas.

In the mean time I found this workaround myself via this page:

At present, I do not managed to establish a wired eth0 connection from
my laptop.
Does anybody have a clue how to get such a connection?

My answer, on two laptops I own including an eeepc, was to install wicd
I have yet (in about 6 installs of 9.10 to get a wireless connection on
anything using knetworkmanager.

I agree that wicd is much more reliable. Highly recommended.
Installing it does remove knetworkmanager.

Hello everybody
This morning I again made a fresh install at the netbook. Now
successfully. With respect to installation of Kubuntu Karmic Netbook
remix at a netbook, two import recommendations have become clear to
me.
RECOMMENDATION 1
It is strongly advisable to copy the Kubuntu image file to the USB
stick via usb-creator-kde EACH TIME AGAIN BEFORE EACH INSTALLATION
SESSION;
RECOMMENDATION 2
Before installing Kubuntu at the netbook, it is better to 'try Kubuntu
without changing anything at the computer' - i.e. the "live" version
at the USB stick. Why: in this situation it is possible to test
whether the internet connection works properly, which is important for
the installation process.
If the connection works properly, a grey-green icon of Networkmanager
is visible.
An extra test in the case of Kubuntu Karmic Netbook Remix is the tab
'newspaper'. If the connection works properly, it reveals a kind of
KDE news blog headlines. But if the connection is not there, you see
only a failure report mentioning the impossibility to connect to the
KDE news blog. In that case it is better to again carry out
RECOMMENDATION 1: a new installation session with a fresh image file
copy at the stick.
Can anybody explain how exactly I could post both recommendations to/
at the Kubuntu help WIKI?
According to at least two persons who posted their advises in this
thread, "WICD" works better then KNETWORKMANAGER.
> I agree that wicd is much more reliable. Highly recommended.
Are you pointing at this app:
http://wicd.sourceforge.net/?
If so, does anybody have experience with both knetworkmanager and wicd
at a netbook or laptop with some version of Kubuntu?
> Installing it does remove knetworkmanager.
Does this removal happen automatically during the installation of
wicd? If so, does it happen without complications elsewhere in the
system configuration?
Thanks, respectfully yours,
Bas.

Yes. Just install it from apt-get:
$ sudo apt-get install wicd

you might want to add that Wicd does not work with 3g-modems or vpn
networks. Not that Networkmanager-kde does much for 3G modems either, as
for VPN I can't tell.
But for "plain old wired and wireless network" I consider it the best
