You are already the 2nd person who advises me to simply install the
current standard (K)ubuntu Karmic -taking into account the good
specifications of the netbook aimed at in the beginning of this
thread.
On the other hand, a few others in this thread and elsewhere point ad
advantages of the current version of "Kubuntu netbook remix":
> it makes using such a small screen actually quite easy (provided you're
> prepared to Alt-Tab through applications)
Does anybody have experience with both "remix" and "standard" Kubuntu
Karmic at a netbook? By the way, for me using alt-tab is perfectly OK
for switching between simultaneously running. applications - even at
the desktop PC with Kubuntu Karmic at which I am writing this message.
.
Respectfully yours,
Bas.

What does the remix have to do with the machine being excellent or not
excellent?

If you are using Compiz, then try ccsm or whatever you use to start
it. In Kwin, Composting can be disabled from System Settings ->
Desktop -> General -> Enable Desktop Effects

I suppose he is assuming that the Netbook Remix is aimed for lighter
resource usage. That is a reasonable assumption, but I don't know how
accurate it is. Both are based on Qt4, so at idle both systems should
have similar resource needs.

Bas Roufs
(K)ubuntu @ Asus Eee PC 1001HA - request for advise.
Hello everybody
Earlier this weekend, I did buy the "Asus 1001HA" - the netbook
specified in the very beginning of this thread. Now, I am starting to
prepare it for the installation of Kubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 - the
distro I have chosen for that machine after carefully evaluating all
the different advises in this thread and elsewere.
Now I am at this stage:
> > .... *to minimise the size of the Windows 7 partition as much as possible.
Taking into account your words of caution, Kaj, I am following up now
your suggestions from about one week ago:
> With Windows 7, you *must* use the Windows partioner to shrink the NTFS
> partion. It's located *somewhere in what they call the "Control Panel" - or some such. When
> doing so, Windows7 will announce a minimal size. So let it do its thing,

> place, right?). After that you will have an "unallocated partition".
> Install whatever (K)ununtu there.
After carrying out these suggestions, an "unallocated partition" of
172,38 GB does show up - at a HD of in total 250 GB. So far, so good.
However, there are a few nasty details I would like to check at this
forum before I start installing Kubuntu.
The "disk administration" inside WIN7 shows now a schedule apparently
meant to show how the HD looks like now.
The schedule starts left with the remaining NFTS partition with the
Windows system - now shrunk till it's apparently minimal size 50,49%.
From this partition, 70% is still free. However, I do not manage to
shrink it more.
The second partition from the left is already the so-called
'unallocated' partition, now 172,38 GB.
The third partition from the left is a so-called 'primary partition'
of 10 GB. When clicking at it, one option is being mentioned:
'removing' it. When clicking for more information, the following is
being mentioned: "this partition can contain data that can be
recognised by other operating systems". That's why, I am wondering
whether this partition can be used also somehow usefully at, with and
for the Kubuntu system. In other words - what is the best thing to do
with this partition:
* maintaining it as it is now?
* maintaining it, but somehow putting it next to the NFTS partition?
* "removing" it with a view to adding it to the 'unallocated' partition?
The 4th and last partition seen from the left is a tiny 16 MB
"EFI-system partition", whatever that may be. When clicking at it, no
possibility is being mentioned. It seems to be impossible to expand,
shrink or remove it. Will this partition also have some function after
installing Kubuntu?
This is it for now. Thank you very much for any feedback that might come in.
Respectfully yours,
Bas.

So now, roughly speaking, you should have:
Win 68GB
Unallocated 172GB
System Recovery 10GB
EFI 16MB (This is used to speed up boot time if set up to do so).
Does it seem right to you?
You have to install into the unallocated partition using logical partitions. I
would make a / (root), /home and swap. You will end up with 3 primary
partition and an extended partition containing 3 logical partitions.
You could run the live usb kubuntu remix an check it

Hello Lanzen and Everybody

No - 50,5 GB for the Windows partition. (In my previous mail I did not
write this clearly.)

Yes.
> System Recovery 10GB
The number, 10 GB, is right. The idea of a 'system recovery' at that
place sounds logic, but I am not sure about it. Will this 'system
recovery' also function for the Kubuntu partition, in case of need?
> EFI 16MB (This is used to speed up boot time if set up to do so).
Yes. (Your explanation between brackets is clear.)
> Does it seem right to you?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_Volume_Management
See my remarks above.

"Logical partitions" are you aiming at the so-called "logical volume
management",
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_Volume_Management ?
> would make a / (root), /home and swap.
Via a hand, non-guided, tailor made partitioning?
> You will end up with 3 primary partitions
You mean: the WIN partition, the 10 GB (system recovery?) partition
and the EFI partition?
> and an extended partition containing 3 logical partitions.
You mean the 'unallocated' partition, to be partitioned in / , /home and swap?
> You could run the live usb kubuntu remix an check it
Can I run 'Gparted' or something from such a live USB?
Thanks, respectfully yours,
Bas.

I do not know win7, but I suppose you should get a menu item in grub2 from
where you can run a win7 recovery routine in the same way it would do for xp.
So, not from Kubuntu, but in grub, soon after boot and provided you have
disabled the fast boot option.

Wow, it really looks geeky! LOL!
How about going the simple way...
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/structPartitions-c.html

Yes. Indeed you can run gparted (or maybe kde partition manager) and I'm sure
it will be clear how to proceed once you are in there.
