Default New instances of printer on Jaunty

Hi,

I want to be able to print in "FastDraftGreyscale" or FastDraftColor" under
jaunty, but not every application lets me choose the printing resolution.
In my old "Suse" and in Hardy I would just create alternate instances of my
(local) printer, then select one from the printer dialog of the application
(that will do the printing).

Jaunty's printer configuration has no option to add new instances of local
printer (or I failed to notice).
Google was of no help.

Any tips?

Thanks Perry

You should be able to add instances in CUPS. You don't mention how you are
doing your configuration.

In your browser, use localhost:631

to get to the CUPS admin screens.

Not sure I understand your question.
I was trying in the KMenu:
System/system configuration (no printer icon there)/Advanced/printer
configuration icon... and there you have the option of adding a printer that
forks in New network or New Class.
Man, it was so easy under Hardy, to add an instance through:
KMenu/System parameters/printers

I tried that, failed to see an easy option to add an instance.
One can add a class (not sure that is what I want) or a printer, but must
answer questions like "Material" or "URI of the material"

Perhaps the command "lpoptions" is required, I still have to figure out how to
get it working
----------------------------------------------------------
from : http://www.cups.org/doc-1.1/sum.html#5_7 I got:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I tried:
lpoptions -p Photosmart-C4200-series/FastDraftBW -o
Quality=300FastDraftGrayscaleK

Where "Photosmart-C4200-series" was read from localhost:631
"FastDraftBW" is an arbitrary name
"Quality=300FastDraftGrayscaleK" was read from the output of
lpoptions after having selected this resolution from the advanced tab in
Kate's printing dialog and printing a page.

Now this FastDraft printer appears in Kate's printing dialog, but it doesn't
print :O(

Any tips?

Thanks Perry

from the http://locahost:631 screen

Administration --> add printer (let it search for printers)

--> select your connection type --> give it name, description, location (only
name is really important such as lp-instance as an example

--> select printer type--> and model

and so on and so on

Thanks, I will try again when I have time, but even when there is a drop down
menu, it contains a frustrating large number of options which I will have to
understand or blindly try.

Greetings Perry

no offense intended, but you better start to think smart.;-)

As you are having one printer already installed and working,
you can either:
Look up your existing printers config inside
http://localhost:631 and note down each setting before
starting to setup your second printer, almost identically.

Or, you will do it manually. For this
/etc/cups/printers.conf is your friend and a good place to
start from.

Kind regards
Eberhard
