Default KDE does not work after upgrade + hang to 9.1

Hi all,

i have upgraded my machine from Kubuntu 9.04 to 9.1. The update ran
without any error. After the update the reboot dialog appeared.
Unfortunately my machine hanged at this moment. So i had to do a hard
reboot. After the reboot it is no longer possible to login into kde. The
login dialog appears. After the login only the background image is shown.

I think the update is not complete (because of the hard reboot). Do you
have an ideas on how to complete the update.

Bye Jochen

Reboot your machine and log in to a recovery session. I would use the one
from your older kernel, not the 2.6.31-14-generic kernel, just to be safe.
When a box comes up, pick something like 'root shell with networking', I don't
remember the exact wording. You will drop to a terminal as root, be careful.
Then type
apt-get update
let that finish and type
apt-get dist-upgrade
When done, type
shutdown -r
That will reboot your system nicely. Hopefully that fixes the problem.

Hi Alan,

thanks for the tip. It didn't fix the problem, but it brought me to the
solution.
I typed 'apt-get install kde*4'.
After downloading of about 1.5GB of kde packages i was able to
log into kde again.
