Default k3b refusing to burn a disk

I am using 8.04 with all updates.

Whenever I try to burn a data cd or dvd k3b at some point will
eventually halt and display an error

"cdrecord has no permission to open the device"

which device this refers to remains a mystery (at least to me)

here is the debug output

I have checked the installation settings, I have completely removed
and reinstalled k3b but without any change in the above behaviour.
(and trashed too many disks and lost irrecoverable date due to this
problem now) I am completely at a loss as to what to do about this,
anyone got any ideas please?

It looks like you have two drives, one Sony (scd1) and a Pioneer
(scd0) do you get same errors on both? What is the permissions on
those devices and what groups do you belong to? Give us the output of
this commands from a console "ls -l /dev/scd*" and "groups". It make
no sense that you first get a "cdrecord has no permission to open the
device" but it still goes on with the burning. While doing your
testing do you have a DVD-RW disc so you don't waste a lot of media?

That could happen if there is another user (who logged in before you),
and who is still logged into the computer.

If that is not the case, I would start by trying to:

determine which device it is (probably '/dev/scd0'), and doing something like:
(shell command!)

% sudo lsof | grep /dev/scd0

To see if some other user or program is locking the device.

Other than that you can always try to use another CD/DVD burner (i.e.
brasero), to see if the same happens.

If you are in a hurry to burn something, to force you way out of this
problem you could run k3b as root:

kdesudo k3b

which is nonetheless **not** something you should be normally doing,
but I guess that if you are in a hurry, it is the fastest way to get
the CD/DVD written.

> which device this refers to remains a mystery (at least to me)

My guess is that the device you cannot open is: /dev/scd0

Other tips would be to try the next "burn procedure tests" using the
"test" option of k3b to avoid wasting disks. It does everything but
with the laser light turned off.

Kind regards,

Yes. Plus I have a few dvdrw too. The first of the dvd batch I used
worked without problem, but none have since.

I have sometimes found that kio_* sometimes takes possession of the
drive and causes these types of errors. Usually, however, k3b prompts
you when this happens and asks you if you want to kill that process.

I did try that and the exact same error was generated. I had also
tried running k3b as root before (i.e. permission problems), but
again the same error was generated. As this is a completely fresh
install of k3b, permissions should have been setup, so I suspect some
other problem. Either my hardware, a Pioneer drive less than one year
old is faulty, or something is wrong with the k3b package itself. I
also tried a forced install of the previous version of k3b, but that
produced the same results and outcome.

The only thing I havn't tried so far is other burning software. I
didn't want to install brasero because of dependencies it pulls in,
but this I will try next, tonight or in the morning.
