Default apache2 setup stuff

Stupid question time

I never had trouble in the past, but on 7.10 I have installed apache2-docs and
they live in /usr/share/doc/apache2-doc/ but I can't figure out how to
*browse* them. They are full of dead ends and other languages.
Is there a way to access them via http://localhost ?

I am trying to get back to my old setup of:
1. localhost/~donn mapping to /home/donn/public_html
2. Having the ability to 'browse' via apache, so I can change directories in
the browser.
3. Be able to follow symlinks to other dirs out of public_html

I'm sure I can get them all setup if I can just *read* the damn docs! Of
course, I'll take all suggestions from the lazyweb

Hi Donn,
now I don't really know if I fully understand the problem. But for
browsing in "/usr/share/doc", I use firefox with this address
"file:///usr/share/doc/"
(building up of the page takes a few seconds)

regards, Mike

The way to access files on your machine from a browser window use
file:// followed by the full path (including the leading /). So the
apache docs would be at:

file:///usr/share/doc/apache2-doc/

which will display the contents of that directory (or the file). Note
that there are three "/"s after the colon.

I savvy that one can browse html files "offline" like that, but the problem is
that I can't find the right index.html and links within the docs go to all
kinds of dead ends. I'm pretty sure it needs to be browsed via apache itself
in order to work - my question was how to set that all up.

To answer my own question:
1. Install apache2-docs
2. sudo a2enmod userdir
3. /etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload
4. Now one can browse to localhost/docs/apache2-doc/manual and actually read
the docs.
5. Also localhost/~username is activated.
