Default 4.1 white screen?

Nope, no combo of mouse clicks or keyboard shortcuts yields any results
positive or negative. Just a pure white screen with a mouse pointer.

Have you tried re-configuring X?

No. 3.5.10 is working fine. If X were borked then 3.5.10 would not work.

Did you switch on Desktop Effects? I did that in my VBox 4.1 and the
screen went black, not white... I somehow managed to recover but can't
remember how.

I don't believe I did but I wouldn't be surprised if something, somewhere
tripped them on. It seems like a reasonable explanation. I'll presume that's
the case and try to figure out a way to verify they're on and disable them if
they are. Thanks.

Default 4.1 white screen?

Ahem, That's what I would have assumed. I've seen the white screen on most
4.1 logins, but it is usually replaced by a normal desktop in a few seconds.

However, I've had a variety of odd behaviors w/ 4.1 on a system that has
3.5.9.

I haven't traced any of the problems, but in general I would say that 4.1
sometimes behaves badly w/ certain X configurations and it definitely
interacts with the 3.5 configuration.

I suggest using a minimum xorg.conf file (comment out everything you don't
absolutely need, which for a single screen config is just about everything).
What happens?

Rename both ~/.kde and ~/.kde4 and then start kde4. What happens?

Quit, replace the new ~/.kde4 w/ the saved one and restart kde4. What
happens?

Start kde3. Quit and restart kde4. What happens?

Restore the saved ~/.kde3. Restart kde4. What happens?

Ah that is true. I sure wasn't paying attention to the original post. DUH Me.

if i'm not mistaken, and assuming kde is still accepting keyboard
strokes, alt-shift-f12 toggles desktop effects on and off, you could try
this.

You two deserve a gold star. O. Sinclair for hitting the problem and
Willy K. Harma for providing the exact key sequence for the fix. Thanks
everyone else for the suggestions.
