Default seed changes in quantal

Some seed changes I've made:
skanlite - requested at UDS and various times by users
kamoso - requested at UDS and equates to cheese on ubuntu
libreoffice -> calligra - experimental for now, people will moan about inability to save in MS Office formats, but libreoffice is just as buggy I feel, MS Office import is better in calligra, fits in better with the KDE focused aspect of Kubuntu
kopete -> kde-telepathy - it's maintained
kdm -> lightdm - likewise
language-selector dropped, patch added to kcm locale to install language packs

Consider the moaning to have started then. If this is the path we're on, then
what's the answer to the question, "How do I get an MS Office format document so
I can send it to someone?"

I've found this doesn't just affect me, but also my children as they have to
turn in word and powerpoint files routinely for homework assignments. I have
one child starting University soon and the University's computer requirements
were that you could bring any computer you wanted as long as it had MS Office.

For documents that will only exist electronically locally, ODF is great, but
it's not on any practical basis a means for exchange of files which is more and
more how documents are managed.

If there's a decent converter that we can install so that someone can click on
an icon and convert it, maybe that's good enough, but the ability to save if
Office formats is not optional.

Scott K

P.S. Nothing against Calligra as an application. I've started using Calligra
Words a fair amount and am coming to like it, but I still have to us LO to
convert the files to .doc when I'm done.

do we have 0.4 in the archive yet? also do we have a precise PPA for
that? IIRC part of our agreement with upstream was to pull off a good
pre-release testing process to ensure the best possible user
experience.

> kdm -> lightdm - likewise

someone push that upstream plz, makes sense to have the plasma
workspace drop unmaintained kdm in favor of lightdm which *actually*
uses plasma :P

On Calligra Office.
For sharing a final document, PDF export is the best, but I agree- many times you need to share a document with classmates / coworkers using MS Word. That said, has anyone tried to import an ODF in MS Word 2007 or 2010 ? I hear success is 2007:awful and 2010:decent.

Please make calligra optional (i.e. recommends instead of depends) as libreoffice was.

> kopete -> kde-telepathy - it's maintained

Kopete is still in the kickoff favorite applications.

> kdm -> lightdm - likewise

Imho lightdm-kde still has critical bugs that make it unfit for Kubuntu
so I would have waited until they are addressed.

> language-selector dropped, patch added to kcm locale to install language packs

This seems like another rushed change without discussion. The new solution
doesn't support installing translation packages for anything other than the
default Kubuntu applications. Support for installing input methods, dictionaries
and also setting the system language is completely missing.
Even when Ubuntu ditches the language-selector frontend the data currently
provided by /usr/share/language-selector/data/pkg_depends will still be available.

I'm doing that It came up a few times at the KDE Workspace sprint
recently. Response was very positive there.

Last time it was pushed it got a response along the lines of
"Canonical blah blah blah blah.." but it's more mature now and times
have changed (hopefully).

I'm going to be making a release of 0.2.0 this weekend ready for the
new Alpha. Feedback from you (Kubuntu) would be great, then I'll bump
the KDE mailing lists again.

Really?

My bugzilla list is here:

https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?list_id=131553&query_format=advanced&b ug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=AS SIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&product=lightdm

There's only two things in that list I consider critical and both of
those are very nearly complete.
Please, please add anything that's not there as otherwise I obviously
won't fix it. Mark anything "critical" as such in bugzilla and I will
make them a top priority.

We did discuss moving off the Launchpad infrastructure for translations (I
think) at the last Kubuntu meeting. I'm certainly not surprised by it. I'd
expect this is a work in progress.

I understand that libreoffice and openoffice are still easily installable. But the push to default to something that doesn't support ms.office isn't good.* Add me to the list of thinking its not a good idea. I read sometime ago that those working on calligra had no interest in adding support for msoffice. I think this will lead to a lot of first time installs losing favor quickly, especially for students and office workers.

The two bugs I encountered are:
- The shutdown button doesn't work.
- When switching from kdm to lightdm-kde it didn't pick the KDE Plasma session (which is the only
one),
instead logging in always failed until I manually selected the KDE Plasma session.
I can't reproduce this anymore by purging lightdm and installing it again.
Where does lightdm store the default session name?

Note that I only tested the version that is in the Ubuntu archive (0.1.1).
They might very well already be fixed in Git.

AFAIK, all of those are fixed. Test on Tuesday and report anything then

The main default is in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, but there's another
per-user one in ~/.dmrc
