Default opengl apps not running

I’m having trouble running opengl apps like glxgears
and tremulous. The nvidia kernel module is loaded and eselect reports that
opengl is being handled by nvidia but still no opengl app runs. Glxgears complains
about it being run in the wrong display.

You have "nvidia" in your xorg.conf right? What do you xorg settings look like?
