Could you do: $ ps aux | grep pulse In my system, the result is: canek 752 0.0 0.1 320096 4164 ? Sl May27 0:03 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog which means that the PulseAudio daemon is running as my user (canek). To write into /, the daemon should be running as root; if the result from "ps aux" shows that, it means that your system is starting pulseaudio as the superuser.
