Can amd64 distcc compile for a gentoo x86 setup?
Or do I need a 32bit chroot?

chroot is not needed, at worst you would need to use crossdev, but if
you use multilib and both hosts are using the same version of GCC,
lucky you, there is a chance you may be able to do it without much
effort. :)
