This pop up keeps repeating itself with different PIDs. Eventually,
all settles and I can use kmail.
The problem has started without me updating any KDE related package (I
think) and have run lafilefixer and revdep-rebuild for good measure.
It is worth mentioning that with KDE-4.4.4 akonadi would crash
randomly when trying to launch kmail and take kmail down with it.
Restarting kmail worked on the second attempt. Unfortunately, the
multiple popups are hindering productivity and am thinking of calling
it a day on kmail.
Any ideas on what is causing this and more importantly how I could fix it?
I'm attaching the errors when I launch kmail from a terminal.
PS. While I'm at it: any other good mail clients out there (other
than T'bird) which include an address book and S/MIME, GnuPG, but do
*not* require a lorry load of gnome libs?

Things go much easier when your erorr log is only 15k if you just in-line it.
You made an attachment which is gzipped. The effort that implies almost bad me
delete your mail and no answer as being tl;dr

I am almost sure that this was not the case with KDE-4.3 or if it was, then
this update did not take longer than a second.

Yes, SQLITE is not recommended, however it worked alright up until now.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will mv the db and try starting it again. How
does one start akonadi? It's no longer listed in systemsettings in KDE-4.4.

What does that mean? Why did it run out of memory - there's still plenty of
RAM.

No, that's what got me confused and I had to ask here for suggestions. Why
would it be trying to access a lockfile which is not there?

Alan, thank you for your help. I did read the errors although somewhat in a
rush.
I couldn't find the lock file akonadi referred to and I couldn't understand
why it was trying to access a file that was not there. I thought of blowing
the db and starting KDE or kmail, but just to be sure I asked here first. I
didn't want to risk losing access to my mail or address book.

No previous Akonadi control error log found.
Details: The Akonadi control process did not report any errors during
its previous startup.
===========================
As the results of test 10 say it seems that something has gone
sideways with the resource agents. Is this an environment problem?
This is what I have under /usr/share/akonadi/agents, which akonadi
tells me that is has searched:
Now kmail crashes immediately after I acknowledge the akonadi self
test popup, so I can't use my mail. :-(
Any ideas?

Akonadi crashes

Yes it is.
I think that the problem is with me using sqlite instead of mysql, as Alan
already suggested. On the basis that kmail was launching fine (albeit there
was the occasional akonadi crash) since I installed kde-4.4.4 I assumed that
akonadi was just a bit temperamental. However, it seems that with kde-4.4.4
sqlite is less compatible that it was with previous versions.
Deleting the akonadi.db causes sqlite to fail next time akonadi tries to
start:
This is the reason that I could not start kmail at all after I deleted
akonadi.db
I have now restored akonadi.db from a back up and akonadi starts without
drama, however, my addressbook looks empty! I also restored this from a back
up, so I know it is not empty - also, when I start typing an address it
autocompletes.
I also tried to run:
INSERT INTO ResourceTable (name,isVirtual) VALUES
('akonadi_search_resource','true')
as the above link recommends, but it complains:
Error: no such table: ResourceTable
Any idea what the stanza should be?
Clearly kde-4.4.4 is a bit problematic for me because unlike kde devs I do not
need/want to run mysql just for less than 20 addresses or so, that I may have
in my address book.
It may be time to give claws-mail a spin.

OK, I found why this was - I needed to attach the akonadi.db first! Doh!
It now works and can launch kmail fine. :-)
The only problem seems to be that my kaddressbook is empty. This
could be because I am using the old kabc/std.vcf file instead of the
new .local/share/contacts directory format - although I tried the
latter and I got an address book listed, but no contacts in it are
shown in the GUI.
Will have to wait for the next version of KDE as advised on the KDE
akonadi pages.

I did try it and can categorically say that it is not for me.
Managing messages with the keyboard, the way it integrates with Gmail,
its GbuPG and S/MIME plugins, are just not as convenient or smooth
flowing for me as is kmail.
