Default Xorg crashes with signal 11, backtrace

I am running xorg-server-1.3.0.0-r6, xorg 7.2 with
nvidia-drivers-173.14.09. Soon after I start an X session, whether
with startx or xdm, X crashes with the following error:

Backtrace:

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

I tried switching to nv (2.1.9) but it crashes, once again, this time
with the following error:

Backtrace:

I have tried re-emerging xorg and switching to an older version of
nvidia-drivers, to no avail.

look for broken symlinks. Sometimes when you upgrade/deinstall drivers, the

Remove them all, then install the nvidia driver, eselect, check symlinks, try
again.

No broken symlinks, but while I was looking, I discovered the actual
problem - mktemp was missing! A quick emerge mktemp fixed that, and
everything is now running smoothly.

Thank you for trying to help.
