Default Xorg / Intel VGA and multiple display

Hi,

I have the following set-up

HP 6530B laptop with
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

1440x900 Laptop LCD resolution

1600x1200 Ext LCD resolution connected to the DVI port of the docking station

Currently my multi monitor support not working at all and single also looks very buggy. When I start X the LCD screen is fine at 1440x900 and same at my external LCD. When I start monitor applet, my external LCD changes to 1600x1200 together with my internal (which become useless from this point)

The ideal solution would be to use dual monitor with the native resolution of both device and different screen on the two monitors. As I heard with Intel VGA it is not an easy job

For me it would be a big results if my internal display can keep the resolution after I connect to the external one, so when I remove my laptop from the docking station I can still use it without restarting xdm

I was searching for a working xorg.conf but I cannot find any. Maybe some of you already faced with this problem and can send me a working config or can show me some resources where I can find out more info on this topic

Thank you
Laszlo

I'm using xf86-video-intel -> 2.9.1 ; xorg-server* -> 1.6.5 and xorg-drivers -> 1.6

My hardware :
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

I using 2.6.31-gentoo-r2 with KMS and Idon't have a xorg.conf file.

I set my two monitors using xrandr :
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1280x800
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024 --above LVDS1

X works fine, but XFCE display setting don't, waiting for a fix already in the XFCE roadmap.

Hello,

you can achieve this with xrandr.
I have a similar setup and i run the following comand to set things up.

xrandr --output HDMI1 --auto --left-of LVDS1 --output LVDS1 --auto

You get an overview over your devices and their names by typing xrandr
as user.
I also do not have a xorg.conf but let xorg do the config by itself.

So when i am on laptop only, xorg finds the right settings for me. If i
am at home using the second screen, i wrote that command and some other
stuff in a small script and linked that in a bin directory. So i type
"dualscreen" and the script sets things up for me.

#!/bin/bash
xrandr --output HDMI1 --auto --left-of LVDS1 --output LVDS1 --auto
display -window root /home/smash/wallpaper/Feuersbrunst_dual.jpg

So the result looks like this:

yes, something similar working fine for me, but what I'm really looking
for is a solution to make it automatic so, when I put my laptop on
the docking station this should change to dual mode, but when I remove
it can switch back to standalone

at least I would like to make an xorg.conf to handle my two monitors
better than currently where I have to configure resolutions and display
placements each time I reboot my machine or changing from or to docking
station

I know this is a nice dream, but I'm sure the future where this is true
with linux is not so far

Thank you. As I see this is the perfect and the only working solution at
this moment

KDE-4-3 monitor settings applet has a section "dual display" or
something similar, but thinks I don't have a dual capable hardware so
maybe sometimes in the future someone will implement this feature better
and makes it more user friendly.

You should know you can't go posting such fantastic screenshots without
letting us know where you got the wallpaper! =;^)

Please do tell... if you remember, of course.

Default Xorg / Intel VGA and multiple display

Well, that's significantly better than the kcontrol display applet does
for me! It sees two monitors, but only has clone mode, so if try to
change anything, it forces clone mode and screws everything up. Even
after switching back using my xrandr based script, plasma is still mixed
up and have the activities in the wrong place. It always takes me a bit
of fiddling with zooming in and out and etc to get it right, again.

And a couple versions ago, 4.3.0 IIRC, it was WAY bad. I only had to
stop at that applet on the way to another one, for it to screw things
up! I didn't even have to change anything, just open that applet,
accidentally (as it certainly was after the first time!) or deliberately,
and it would screw things up! I learned to steer VERY clear of it!

But FWIW, the rumor is that the bug that's triggering the problems, that
it recognized only one of the CTRCs or whatever, is fixed in trunk, and
thus will be fixed for 4.4, scheduled for February. I'm eagerly awaiting
that day, as I've not had a properly working kde display applet in years,
with kde3 either, so am really anticipating actually being able to play
with it in the GUI and have the changes work like they're supposed to!
